Marshall

Marshall

The closest comparison I have to Marshall from my upbringing in NYC would be the Hamptons. A 30-40 minute getaway from the hustle and bustle of city life with beachfront and lagoon front property.

Much like the Hamptons (I've never been), it seems to be the frequent choice of escape for a certain very fortunate subsection of Liberia's population.  The already rich, the nouveau rich, and those smart & lucky enough to have secured their properties amidst the current land grab.  The natural amenities in Marshall and it's proximity to the city, also makes it the ideal home for resorts serving anyone and everyone in need of a weekend getaway. One such resort is John Gbedze Beach & Resorts also known as Sunset Beach & Resorts. It happens to be the site of my first ever beach concert. Looking for something not over run with tourists, aidworkers, visitors, and all of Monrovia, my girlfriend and I traveled a little farther to John Gbedze Beach on a Sunday and it was so worth it! Can't believe it's been almost about a year and a half since my first trip to Marshall. My first time being exposed to what social life in LIB outside of the gates of my NGO and outside of Monrovia's clubs and lounges looked like.

It's now officially rainy season so if the sun is out for longer than 2 hours and the rain stays away, I see it as my duty to get to the beach and appreciate all that God has to offer in sweet sweet LIB!

Special thanks to my friend Royda for sharing this priceless beach time with me but also for taking these awesome beach photos. Check out her vlog via philimena.com!
